Employee Motivation components
Employee Management
The chart below details the breakdown of each component and the reason for its inclusion.
| Employee Motivation Component | Component Breakdown | Reason for its Inclusion |
|---|---|---|
| EMPLOYEE MANAGEMENT | 5-Star System | Develop your employees into stars by instituting 5 keys for each. • Select people by selecting for PAVF (see below) • Define each employee's expected outcomes in crystal-clear language via Job Measurement • Focus on each employee's strengths • Manage around each employee's weaknesses • Develop your employees by feedback (see Self-Appraisal). |
| Two streams | Create two streams for advancement, each with comparable financial rewards and status: specialist stream and management stream. That way, good technical people can advance via their specialization and avoid the trap of becoming a poor manager; whereas good managers can pursue management. | |
| Delegating | Delegation means passing the torch to someone else and walking away from it. Delegation involves trust, and that involves risk. But in order to grow you must take the risk that those below can and will learn. Delegation offers: • Relief to your own time pressures • Comfort to others for assuming more responsibility • Leverage through others to expand your own role • More freedom to do what you want to do • Training of those below you • Setting a model for new mangers to follow • Growth and success of the enterprise |
|
| Coaching | All employees need career coaching. Provide some ongoing third-party coaching mechanism to help people fit better to the changing requirements of jobs and to become more effective for you. See www.ccinternational.ca. | |
| Firing | Avoid firing at all costs. Instead, define outcomes jointly as indicated above, between employer and employee. People who cannot meet their own outcomes will realize they are in the wrong job and leave voluntarily with their dignity intact - and usually a lot faster than by any other means. |
